SWMSmate is a free Claude skill. Add it once and Claude knows how to draft a SWMS whenever you ask. It's the most complete version: Claude can create the PDF for you.

SWMSmate in Claude
Make me a SWMS for a switchboard upgrade at 14 Example Ave, Marion SA.
Righto. A few quick things so I can draft it: your business (name, ABN, state), when you're starting, and who's in charge on site?
Sample Electrical, SA. Monday, one day. Dan's in charge.
Summary: 8 job steps, 3 types of high risk work. Look right? Include risk ratings?

Set up SWMSmate in Claude

You'll need: A Claude account. Skills depend on your Claude plan, and on Team or Enterprise plans your admin needs to turn them on.

Option 1Recommended

In the Claude app

Claude on the web or desktop, and Cowork. Easiest — no typing commands.

  1. Download the skill

It's one small file called swmsmate.zip. Leave it zipped — Claude wants the zip file.

  2. Turn on code execution

In Claude, open Settings → Capabilities and turn on Code execution and file creation. Skills need it.

  3. Upload the skill

On the same page, under Skills, choose Upload skill and pick swmsmate.zip. Make sure the skill is switched on.

No Skills section? It depends on your Claude plan. On Team or Enterprise plans, ask your admin to turn skills on.

  4. Ask for a SWMS

Start a new chat and say:

    “Make me a SWMS”

Or tell it more up front:

“Draft a SWMS for replacing a switchboard at 14 Example Ave, Marion SA”
“I need a generic SWMS for gutter cleaning I can use at any house. I'm subcontracting to Acme Roofing.”

It asks up to six quick questions, shows you a one-screen summary to confirm, asks whether to include risk ratings, then writes the SWMS.

Option 2

In Claude Code

If you already use Claude Code in a terminal.

  1. Install the skill

Paste these lines into your terminal. They download the skill and put it in your personal skills folder, so it works in every project.

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
    curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dropwire-Digital/SWMSmate/main/claude/swmsmate.zip -o /tmp/swmsmate.zip
    unzip -o /tmp/swmsmate.zip -d ~/.claude/skills
  2. Start a new session

Start Claude Code again, then check it's there by asking: “What skills do you have?”

  3. Ask for a SWMS

To update later, run the same lines again. They replace the old version.

Get your PDF

Claude gives you SWMS-DRAFT-<site>-<date>.html, plus a ready-made PDF in Cowork and most Claude Code setups. No PDF? Make one from the HTML file:

  1. Open the file in Chrome, Edge or Safari.
  2. Choose Print, then Save as PDF. It's already set up for A4 landscape.
  3. If the colours don't show, turn on Background graphics in the print options.

Handy tips

  • Prefer portrait? Just ask. You can also ask Claude to change any step, control or rating after it's drafted.
  • To update the skill in the Claude app, delete the old one and upload the new swmsmate.zip.
  • Results vary between AI models. Always check the Review before use box on page 1 and every highlighted CHECK item.
It's a draft, not a sign-off
Check it against the real job and site before work starts. Your workers need to read and sign it, and you're responsible for the final SWMS.
